If you are new to a big city, chances are you will be soon taking taxis as transportation. A few simple tips will help you along in taxi etiquette.
First, do not go running past someone who has been waiting to grab the next taxi. Be polite and wait your turn. Another one will come along soon.
In heavy rain or snow, you may choose to share a taxi, even with people you don’t know, as this will get you out of the weather faster. In this case, you should each pay a separate share of the fare and tip.
If you and a friend are sharing a taxi to go to similar locations, the first person to arrive at their destination should pay half of the fare and tip, rather than leaving the last person to arrive with the full amount.
It is easiest for the first person to get out of the taxi to give their share in cash to the remaining passenger, and allow him or her to pay at the end of the trip. If you are the last person in the taxi, don’t feel obligated to turn away the money. This can create uncomfortable feelings of obligation for the person who rode free.
When both genders are riding together, it can be uncomfortable trying to figure out the protocol. But don’t worry. Traditionally, the man would get in the front seat, but if the woman is wearing a long skirt or other attire that may make it difficult to get in the back, she should be able to get in front. Women in long skirts may wish to be the last to get in the cab in order to avoid sliding across the back seat.
Traditionally, the man gives directions to the driver, but today it is most important that the person who best knows the route gives the directions.
Many people are unsure how much to tip a driver. If you were happy with the service, 15-20% is a standard tip. If the driver did not follow your directions, you can tip less or not at all.
